When they ask is your Organisations Data Security Compliant, how will you answer?

In this era of heightened accountability and transparency, ensuring electronic data information security and compliance inspires confidence from investors, customers, employees and other regulatory bodies such as the FSA, SOX, ITIL PCI, THE LAW Data Protection Act.

Policy Commander improves corporate accountability and secures your electronic data by automating the implementation and enforcement of computer security policies and Policy Commander significantly reduces the time and resources needed to create, test, and implement security policies.

When it comes to compliance, building a network defence perimeter just isn’t enough any more. You also need to lock down your Windows systems, proactively maintain secure configurations, and demonstrate ongoing compliance to management and auditors. That’s exactly what Policy Commander will do for you.

Policy Commander automates Windows system compliance to maximise Windows system security and IT efficiency, and minimise organisational risk.

Automated Enforcement
Policy Commander starts by providing guidance and comprehensive libraries of security policies that you can customise to fit the unique compliance requirements of your organisation – from standardising desktops to meeting the IT security requirements of regulations like HIPAA, GLBA, Data Protection ACT, ITIL, SOX and PCI. Leveraging New Boundary Technologies’ innovative automated configuration technologies, Policy Commander helps you easily deploy security policies with pinpoint accuracy – in a fraction of the time it takes to lock down systems manually. Then Policy Commander actively monitors each managed system to ensure compliance with assigned policies. And if a computer drifts out of compliance, Policy Commander can automatically enforce policies and reconfigure the system to its desired security state.

Instant Insight
Policy Commander actively monitors Windows computers to deliver real-time insight into the state of compliance. With its administrative dashboard, you can get an instant snapshot of the current state of compliance for all of your managed Windows systems. You can even have Policy Commander notify an administrator the moment a system becomes non-compliant. And Policy Commander’s web reporting tool delivers the detailed reports like compliance history and audit trails that you need to satisfy management and auditors alike.

Comprehensive Content (Review our list of free Security Policy Templates)
Policy Commander delivers a growing knowledge base of security policies developed by New Boundary Technologies based on policy templates from Microsoft and leading IT security organisations like NIST and the NSA. With the integrated Policy Editor, you can create your own policies and easily customise existing ones.

Centralised Control
Policy Commander lets administrators define the role and security level of a computer, and automatically applies the appropriate security policies for its role and security level. Policies can be implemented in a trial mode to determine their impact on the network and critical applications, and then easily switched to a production mode in a single step. Policy Commander maintains your security policies in a central location and provides an easy-to-use, browser-based console for centralized administration.

Policy Commander Software as a Service (SaaS)

Security Policy Knowledge Base - Policy Knowledgebase and Compliance Guides

Policy Commander delivers a growing knowledge base of security policies developed by New Boundary Technologies based on policy templates from Microsoft and leading IT security organizations like NIST and the NSA. These policies help you quickly and easily secure workstations and servers, protect sensitive electronic data, and assist with regulatory compliance.

Standard Components, Flexible Architecture

Policy Commander runs on Microsoft’s Windows 2000 (and higher), and uses MS SQL Server and MSDE. Policy Commander’s flexible architecture can easily scale to support your ever-expanding network of servers and workstations.

Powerful Policy Editor

Policy Commander includes a Policy Editor that allows administrators to modify existing security policies or create new ones. The New Boundary Technologies security policy format allows for the use of conditional logic, smart rules, packages and security template files, enabling administrators target specific computers with appropriate security policies, and to define policies by important characteristics such as applicability, compliance and enforcement.

What does Policy Commander do?

Policy Commander automates the monitoring and enforcement of security policies on Windows computers. Using a browser-based console, Policy Commander provides both a graphical summary view of compliance across the entire enterprise, and a detailed-level view of security policies and computers. Policy Commander enables organizations to enforce policies automatically or manually. In addition, Policy Commander sends out alerts to notify the appropriate personnel when a computer is no longer in compliance with a policy.

What security policies are included with Policy Commander?  Policy Knowledgebase and Compliance Guides

Policy Commander contains a library of approximately 70 security policies, which range from the very simple (e.g., disable automatic Windows update) to the complex security policies defined in the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Security Guide. Because IT security is a vital component of regulatory compliance, New Boundary Technologies’ library of policies can be used to comply with a variety of regulatory mandates, including Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, and the Graham-Leach-Bliley Act. New Boundary Technologies is continually adding new security policies to the library.

How does Policy Commander support regulatory mandates such as Sarbanes-Oxley, ITIL, Data Protection Act, HIPAA, and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act:

Policy Commander provides a powerful security configuration foundation for organizations required to comply with regulatory measures like Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA. Our configuration and compliance solutions have helped administrators meet the IT control requirements for a variety of regulatory mandates. Policy Commander expands on our competencies by providing the following:
• Complete, centralized security policy management.
• Immediate, up-to-date security configuration information to help company executives and auditors make informed compliance decisions.
• Ease-to-understand, real-time status and view of an organization’s computer policy compliance state.
• Automated and continuous monitoring, remediation, and enforcement of all security policies.
• A library of “best practices” policies from New Boundary Technologies, Microsoft, NSA and NIST that can quickly be deployed and implemented.

How is Policy Commander licensed?

Policy Commander is licensed per managed computer for both workstations and servers. NetWorld UK also now offer Policy Commander as Managed Service based solution (SaaS) More Information

Is Policy Commander an agent-based or agent-less application?

Policy Commander is an agent-based solution that requires the New Boundary Technologies client be installed on each managed workstation and server. Because agent less solutions require the use of remote procedure calls (RPC), remote registry access, file sharing, or some combination of these, they are inherently insecure because they rely on these insecure mechanisms. Managing a secure environment requires an agent-based solution. By leveraging the New Boundary Technologies client, Policy Commander can securely configure any managed computer regardless of its physical location, hardware or software firewalls in place, demilitarized zones, etc. In addition, because it is agent-based, Policy Commander can monitor and enforce security policies even when the system is not connected to the network.

What does Policy Commander do that I can not already do with MS Group Policy?

Policy Commander allows administrators to target specific computers or groups of computers based on their role, operating system and security level, while Group Policy is much less granular in its targeting capabilities. Group Policy requires the managed server and workstation to be authenticated to the network while Policy Commander can continuously monitor and enforce policies even when systems are offline. Group Policy does not manage complex security policies, such as those requiring conditional assessments.
In addition, Policy Commander also:
• Provides a graphical, high-level summary view of policy compliance.
• Automates alerts and notifications in cases of non-compliance.
• Delivers continuous security policy enforcement.
• Provides intuitive reports on computer and policy compliance status.

What software (and what versions of software) do I need to run Policy Commander?

The Policy Commander installation can be divided into component installations:
• You have the option of installing the Web Server and Communications Server on a single machine, or on separate machines.
• The Web Server, Communications Server and Client Computers require Windows 2000 or higher.
• The Web Server must be an IIS server and have the .NET 2.0 Framework installed. (Supplied)
• The Database Server requires Microsoft SQL 2005 Express (Supplied), or Full SQL 2005, Microsoft SQL Server 2000, SP3 or higher.

What operating systems does Policy Commander support?

Policy Commander supports Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003,Windows XP. Windows Vista 32bit (64 Bit June 2008)

What’s New: The client installation program for Policy Commander version 1.0.1 inadvertently timed out causing the client to prematurely expire in early May, 2005.   The client installation program in version 1.0.2 no longer expires.

What’s New: Policy Commander version 1.0 displayed an enforcement status that did not always match the compliance status displayed for a given policy. For example, upon enforcing a policy, the console might display "error.” This was because Policy Commander's first check of the policy after enforcing it still found it out of compliance. This has been fixed.
Policy Commander's "dismiss" and "enforce" links have been improved and now work correctly in the Firefox browser.
